RA May Slow You Down, But Keep On Moving!

My husband said, ” RA may slow you down, but you always keep on moving”.  This was after he came home from a bike trip on one of the many wonderful Wisconsin bike trails!  He took the photo of this cool huge turtle because it reminded him of me and my RA (rheumatoid arthritis)!

I discovered even before my formal diagnosis that keeping my body in motion actually made me feel better, even if I didn’t think I had the energy to do it.  It was an accidental revelation.  The lawn needed to be mowed and I was the only one around to do it.  I forced myself to get my shoes on, get the mower out of the garage, put gas in it and start her up.  After I finished, I felt noticeably better and had more energy.  It was refreshing!

I noticed the same thing when I took a two-mile walk.  After I walked a mile, I noticed my mood had improved and I didn’t hurt as much.

I do a 50-minute pilates session each week and if I miss it, I pay the price with more aches and pains.

My body also loves a trip to the grocery store!  I am a foodie, so I am in my element surrounded by fruits, vegetables, and wonderful spices!

This quote by Lynn Good, an American businesswoman, sums it up pretty well.  This is exactly what I thought when my weird symptoms kept popping up without an explanation.  I just tried my best to keep moving.  By keeping on moving, it has become easier to look forward and stay integrated into the day-to-day life I want to be a part of.  My mobility, flexibility, and endurance has improved.

The huge, but very cool tortoise reminds me of a favorite Aesop fable entitled  The Hare and the Tortoise.  The moral of the story is slow but steady wins the race.  We are not in a race per say, but our life well-lived is the race.  RA may slow us down, but by keeping moving, we have a better opportunity for a life well-lived.

Of course, bringing in the voice of reason, any physical activity needs to be approved by your doctor.  By discussing your plans with your doctor, together you can take into consideration any circumstance unique to you.

Naturally, I apply about everything I do to my FRESH strategy.  This is part of the E for exercise strategy.  When I keep moving, or exercise, I not only feel better, but I can move better and have more stamina.  For a person with RA, that is no small thing.
