Eating Fish Twice a Week, What a Great Plan!

We will be eating fish twice a week from now on.  That is the executive decision I made this week after reading the results of a cross-sectional analysis published in Arthritis Care and Research.

The finding showed that RA (rheumatoid arthritis) patients consuming fish two or more times a week had a significantly lower DAS28-CRP compared with RA patients who ate fish once a month or less.  The DAS28-CRP is the Disease Activity Score that uses the C-Reactive Protein value and 28 different joints for its calculation.  This was an observational study, therefore it doesn’t prove cause and effect.  However, it is enough good news information for me to make it a goal to serve fish twice a week for dinner!

This is what the lead author had to say:

If our finding holds up in other studies, it suggests that fish consumption may lower inflammation related to rheumatoid arthritis disease activity,” said Dr. Sara Tedeschi, lead author of the Arthritis Care & Research study. “Fish consumption has been noted to have many beneficial health effects, and our findings may give patients with rheumatoid arthritis a strong reason to increase fish consumption.”

Staying on the lookout for any new information that comes available is important to me when it comes to managing my RA.  After reading about this study and the methods used, I am inspired to purpose to include wild caught salmon into my menu planning twice a week.  To make it doable, I will be in the hunt for interesting and tasty recipes for all the Arthritis Wisdom family to enjoy!

My plan to include fish in my diet twice weekly is in line with my FRESH strategy.  The F is addressing the food I eat, my diet, as it pertains to my RA disease management.  In addition to my biologic, I have made significant lifestyle changes I believe have made a huge difference in how well I feel.  After being introduced to the anti-inflammatory diet concept, I decided to restrict processed foods.  I saw an improvement almost immediately.  I also felt lousy if I ate processed foods.  That was enough of an incentive to pay close attention to what I was eating.  I pretty much eat whole foods, how the food is in nature!  The fish consumption is an added piece to the strategy.

The rest of my FRESH strategy is R for relaxation or stress reduction, E for exercise, S for good sleep habits and H for proper hydration.  The FRESH acronym is quick and easy for me to refer to if my joints start hurting or I can tell I’m fatigued.  They are two symptoms that alert me that my disease activity may be on the rise.  I can make a quick assessment and usually identify a lapse in my FRESH strategy that I correct.  This has worked very well for me.

My desire is for my RA to have the smallest footprint on my day-to-day living!  This study is the encouragement I needed to make sure I include eating fish twice a week to my diet.  I will be watching for future studies to confirm what this study is suggesting, but at this point, it is enough for me to make the dietary change.  And that is using Arthritis Wisdom!
