3 Tips to Stay Hydrated

Why is it such a challenge to stay hydrated?  I have no problem satisfying my coffee urge, it is automatic to start the day with a cup of joe.  It is so automatic that I don’t even have to think about brewing it, I just do it!  My goal is to figure out a way to make it automatic to stay hydrated so my body can function at it’s best.  That is especially important because my body is already dealing with an inflammatory autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Why we need to stay hydrated

Water is a necessity.  Every cell, tissue and organ in our body depends on it to function properly.  Water helps regulate body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure.  It is necessary to transport nutrients and to remove waste and toxins from our body.  And of great interest to those of us with RA, it lubricates our joints.

How much water do we need?

So, how much water do we need?  We are all unique, therefore the amount of water intake necessary varies from person to person, but a rule of thumb is to take your body weight in pounds, divide that number in half and the final number is how many ounces of water you need each day.  The color of your urine is a good indicator for proper hydration.  You want your urine to be light yellow, the color of lemonade.  If your urine is the color of apple juice or darker, you are likely dehydrated.

In addition to dark urine, signs of dehydration include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness and confusion.

For those of us challenged to stay hydrated, here are a few tips to the rescue!

3 Tips to Stay Hydrated

  1. Infuse your water with fruit, a veggie or herb to give it a refreshing flavor!  Try a slice of lemon, lime or orange, some berries, cucumber, or mint.  Added nutrients will be a bonus!
  2. Make it a game!  Keep a water bottle with cold, refreshing water with you during the day to sip on.  Keep track of how much you drink to meet your daily goal!
  3. Eat your water.  Many fruits and vegetables have a high water content.  Try melons, apples, citrus fruits, in addition to soups, salads, yogurt to name a few.

If you are feeling hungry, drink a glass of water.  You may actually be thirsty.  Thirst and hunger sensations are often confused.

I live by my *FRESH* approach to managing my RA.  The H is for hydration, so the quest to stay hydrated is always on my radar.
