Living in Wisconsin, I cannot escape the football frenzy that is going on right now. The local team is still in the hunt for another Super Bowl trophy and the fans are all revved up! No wonder, did you see the Packer win over the Dallas Cowboys? The Packer offense, namely the quarterback, made all the difference in the win. The Cowboy defense couldn’t stop them! A great example of how the best offense is a good defense. Defenses win championships!
I’ve been thinking about how my RA (rheumatoid arthritis) may put me at risk for other health issues. I’m adopting the best-offense-is-a-good-defense way of thinking. Here is how I’m approaching the situation.
First of all I’m looking at my family history. I’m also looking at disease states that often go hand-in-hand with RA, such as heart disease. I will keep a close eye on my blood pressure and lipid profile. I will also take care of my dental health, as I have earlier posted about. (See http://www.arthritiswisdom.com/blog/dental-health2) I’ve been on prednisone, so I want osteoporosis on my radar. Last, because of family history, taking prednisone, and previous lab results, I want pre-diabetes on my list to watch closely.
My plan is to make sure I have routine laboratory tests, dental check-ups, and a DEXA scan to look at my bone density. I want to eat primarily a diet containing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, salmon, nuts, seeds and dairy products rich in calcium. I do not have issues with dairy products, so I do enjoy cheeses and milk fortified with vitamin D. I have my weekly pilates session and walk Gipper, my dog. I am working on bringing a few women together to swim weekly, also.
My thinking is to not only treat and manage my RA, but to be aware of what other diseases or conditions I may be at risk for, and do what I can with my diet and lifestyle to prevent any other health issues. This is my way of practicing how the best offense is a good defense!
